What cookies are
Cookies are small text files a website stores on your device. Similar technologies, such as local storage and tracking pixels, work in much the same way. We use “cookies” here to cover all of them.
The cookies we use
| Cookie | Set by | Type | Purpose | Lasts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
_ga | Google Analytics | Analytics | Distinguishes visitors | 2 years |
_ga_<ID> | Google Analytics | Analytics | Keeps track of a session | 2 years |
hubspotutk | HubSpot | Analytics and marketing | Recognises a returning visitor who has submitted a form | 6 months |
__hstc | HubSpot | Analytics | Tracks visits and sessions | 6 months |
__hssc, __hssrc | HubSpot | Analytics | Session counting | Session to 30 minutes |
__cf_bm | HubSpot (Cloudflare) | Strictly necessary | Protects forms from bots | 30 minutes |
This site also stores a few preferences in your browser’s local storage, such as which anomalies you’ve found in our anomaly hunt. They never leave your device.
Tools can change the cookies they set. We review this list when we add or change a tool.
Strictly necessary cookies
These keep the site secure and working, for example protecting forms from spam. The site can’t work properly without them, so they’re always on.
Analytics and marketing cookies
These help us understand which pages are useful and how people find us, and, if you submit a form, connect your visits to your enquiry so we can reply with context. Where the law requires your consent for these, we’ll ask for it before setting them.
How to control cookies
- Browser settings. Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may stop parts of the site working.
- Google Analytics opt-out. Google offers a browser add-on that stops Google Analytics collecting data on any site.
- Private browsing. Cookies set in a private or incognito window are deleted when you close it.
